The advent of AI tools, particularly natural language processing (NLP) systems like ChatGPT, offers fresh avenues for tackling the complexities of extremist behavior. A recent study titled “A cyberterrorist behind the keyboard: An automated text analysis for psycholinguistic profiling and threat assessment” seeks to explore how AI can enhance profiling efforts aimed at understanding and curtailing terrorism. Conducted by researchers at Charles Darwin University (CDU), this study holds potential ramifications for the efficiency of anti-terrorism strategies.

The researchers embarked on a systematic analysis by feeding a dataset that included 20 public statements made post-9/11 by international terrorists into the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) software, which specializes in text analysis. They then utilized the capabilities of ChatGPT to extract meaningful insights from this data. By presenting ChatGPT with a curated selection of statements from four identified terrorists, the team sought to answer two critical questions: What underlying themes or topics emerge from these texts? What grievances can be discerned from the communicated messages?

The responses provided by ChatGPT showcased its ability to categorize themes effectively. Common motifs identified included a perceived sense of victimhood, notions of retribution, and a rejection of established democratic frameworks. Such analyses are essential for law enforcement as they facilitate a deeper understanding of the rationale behind extremist ideologies.

One of the striking aspects of the study is how ChatGPT not only identified various themes but also elucidated underlying motivations linked to violent behavior. Among the key themes were feelings of oppression, religious grievance, and the desire for vengeance against perceived injustices—emotions often potent enough to unleash individuals into extremist pathways. The alignment of these findings with the Terrorist Radicalization Assessment Protocol-18 (TRAP-18)—a framework for assessing potential terrorist behavior—further underscores the relevance of AI-assisted analyses in real-world applications.

According to Dr. Awni Etaywe, one of the lead authors, the study reveals that while large language models can provide valuable insights, they are not a substitute for human judgment or in-depth textual analysis. However, they can serve as crucial investigative tools that offer leads that may not otherwise emerge from traditional methods.

Despite the promising results, the utilization of AI technologies in counter-terrorism is not without its challenges. Concerns surrounding the potential misuse of AI tools, as highlighted by Europol, amplify the need for the conscientious deployment of such technologies. Issues related to privacy, bias in AI algorithms, and the risk of over-reliance on automated assessments must be addressed to foster an ethical framework for these tools’ use in counter-terrorism.
